ABOUT THE ROLE:

To continue advancing the impact we have across the communities we serve, Commonpoint is hiring a Gymnastics Coach situated within the Health & Wellness Department. The Health & Wellness Department provides opportunities for children, youth, and families to develop healthy habits, physical fitness, confidence, teamwork, and positive life skills through recreational and sports programming.

The Gymnastics Coach is responsible for providing hands-on gymnastics instruction and developing engaging lesson plans that help participants ages 4–18 strengthen their tumbling, balancing, coordination, flexibility, and overall fitness skills. The Coach will create a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment while ensuring that the philosophy and fair-access principles of Commonpoint's Youth Sports Programs are maintained. This role reports directly to the Senior Director of Health & Wellness.

Across the agency, our seasonal and part-time staff play a crucial role in driving our initiatives forward by supporting daily operations, program delivery, and organizational goals.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Agency Expectations:

Support agency initiatives by carrying out assigned duties accurately and efficiently, while following established processes and contributing to basic data collection, reporting, or documentation as required.
Use agency resources responsibly by following established procedures, safeguarding equipment and materials, and/or supporting cost-effective operations.
Work effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and cross-department teams to ensure clear communication, timely task completion, and a positive, respectful work environment.
Follow all safety protocols, policies, and procedures to maintain a safe work environment for staff, partners, and the public, and promptly report concerns or incidents.

Role Expectations:

Provide hands-on gymnastics coaching and instruction to participants ages 4–18 with varying skill levels and abilities.
Plan and implement engaging gymnastics lessons that include comprehensive warm-ups, movement games, floor exercises, tumbling activities, and balance exercises.
Assess participants' skills and abilities and provide instruction appropriate to their individual developmental and skill levels.
Support participants in developing strength, coordination, flexibility, balance, body awareness, and overall fitness.
Teach foundational gymnastics techniques and promote safe and appropriate use of tumbling and gymnastics equipment.
Incorporate opportunities to develop positive life skills, confidence, teamwork, discipline, sportsmanship, and character.
Maintain active supervision and ensure the safety and well-being of all participants under the care of the Youth Sports Program.
Create a welcoming, inclusive environment that provides fair opportunities for all participants.
Communicate effectively with participants, parents/guardians, administration, and other program staff regarding participant progress, needs, and program activities.
Organize, inspect, set up, and break down gymnastics equipment and maintain an orderly and safe program space.
Maintain cleanliness and organization of the gymnasium and playing areas.
Monitor equipment and report maintenance, safety, or supply concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
Demonstrate flexibility and adjust lesson plans or coaching approaches based on participant needs and program requirements.
Represent Commonpoint positively and professionally at all times.
Take initiative, prioritize responsibilities, and work effectively with minimal supervision.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the Senior Director of Health & Wellness.

QUALIFICATIONS & KEY ATTRIBUTES:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Demonstrated gymnastics background and knowledge of fundamental gymnastics techniques.
Previous experience coaching, teaching, or working with children and/or youth.
Ability to develop and implement age- and skill-appropriate gymnastics activities and lesson plans.
Ability to effectively supervise children and maintain a safe program environment.
Strong verbal, listening, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of participants, families, and colleagues.
Strong organizational, time-management, and multitasking skills.
Ability to take initiative, prioritize responsibilities, and work with minimal supervision.
Ability to demonstrate responsibility, dependability, and trustworthiness.
Ability to maintain a clean, organized, and safe playing environment.
Ability to safely assist with equipment setup, breakdown, and organization.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Prior experience coaching gymnastics or tumbling to children ages 4–18.
Experience developing gymnastics lesson plans.
Experience working in a youth sports, recreation, camp, school, or community-based program.
Previous experience in a Commonpoint role is a plus.
Bilingual preferred.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

Commonpoint offers competitive base salaries benchmarked against comparable nonprofit organizations in the New York metropolitan area. Salaries are determined based on internal and external equity, as well as each position’s scope, qualifications, and organizational impact. We believe in compensating staff fairly and consistently, ensuring that all salary decisions align with our mission-driven commitment to equity and transparency.

To maintain fairness across the organization, salary offers are set according to established salary bands and are not subject to negotiation. New hires typically start near the beginning of the salary range to allow for growth based on performance, professional development, and tenure.

Part-Time Rate: $25.00-$35.00/hr (based on experience)

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Environment: In-person work in a gymnasium/recreation facility with active gymnastics and tumbling programming.
Physical Requirements: Regular standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, kneeling, and movement throughout the gymnasium. Ability to demonstrate or assist with basic gymnastics and tumbling activities as appropriate.
Physical Effort/Lifting: Ability to assist with the movement and setup of gymnastics equipment and materials, including lifting equipment within program requirements.
